Abstract:

This presentation gives an insight in Xetal’s unique technology, how the idea was triggered and how we use it in the healthcare sector to make hospitals safer and to improve the quality of life of elderly people. Most of the contemporary solutions aimed at avoiding or reducing falls, monitoring the intrusion or escape of people make use of beacons or tools located on the person’s body. This need of having a device on the person to be able to determine their position results in people being forced to wear bracelets, anklets or even concealed microchips in their garments. Xetal addresses this issue by introducing an indoor positioning system that can determine the position of people in a certain space without any devices fixated to the person’s body. Our main product, MoCa, is a localization system which uses this unique technology based on the body temperature to detect the position and movement of a person in a room.  This system does not require the person to wear any beacons on the body, such as bracelets or microchips in their garments, and is mobile so it is transferrable between rooms. Furthermore, I will discuss the evolution of the MoCa system, including several challenges we encountered, and elaborate on some care institutions that currently make use of our applications.

Abstract:

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is approved worldwide for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor, dystonia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and more recently epilepsy, while other neurological and psychiatric disorders are under investigation. Since its spinoff from Philips in May 2011, Sapiens has developed an innovative high-resolution DBS implant with the capacity to steer electrical pulses away from areas of the brain that can produce undesirable side-effects. The SureStim-1 system will provide the clinician with more flexibility in adjusting and fine-tuning, which is expected to result in uncompromised therapeutic benefits for patients. In addition, supporting products are being developed to allow for faster implantation procedures and more effective programming. The intra-operative FAME (First–Acute-in-Man-Evaluation) pilot study performed at the Department of Neurosurgery, Academic Medical Center (AMC), Amsterdam, was the first clinical investigation of Sapiens’ new high-resolution SureStim-1 lead. The study conclusions demonstrated the ability of Sapiens’ lead to steer stimulation, modulate side-effect thresholds and increase the therapeutic window. This outcome has drawn a lot of market interest, culminating with the acquisition of Sapiens by Medtronic in August 2014. This is an important milestone towards the realization of next generation brain modulation devices.

About the event

In the framework of the GENEESS project, DSP Valley and COHESI organize a seminar titled “The journey towards smart and market-ready solutions in health” on Tuesday November 18, 2014 at imec. Many smart health applications will never enter the market for a number of reasons. Often the problem finds its origin in an unsuitable business model. Therefore more attention must be paid on this topic. In this seminar four interesting stories will be presented, covering different aspects of smart microsystems in the health domain, with not only a focus on technology but also on how they found their way into the health market.

About the event

Electronics is escaping its traditional confinement to flat rigid boards. Flexible electronics has become mainstream, but there is more on the horizon: research on stretchable and ultra-thin systems that can be embedded unobtrusively in randomly shaped plastic or composite objects, textiles etc. has reached maturity and is ready to enable major technological revolutions such as the internet of things. The UGent-imec lab CMST is one of the key labs worldwide in this domain, and during this event a comprehensive overview will be given of the different technology platforms CMST is developing. Both mature and novel early-stage research results will be presented.

After the plenary introduction you will have the opportunity to visit a number of booths with live demos of several of the technology platforms developed at CMST, including the stretchable and one-time deformable electronics platform, the ultra-thin chip packaging technology, the polymer photonics sensor and interconnection platform and the work on smart contact lenses and smart power. There will be ample time for discussion with specialists at every booth.

Research at the micro and even nano-level requires an ultra-clean environment. CMST runs as part of its infrastructure a state-of-the-art 700+ m² cleanroom with several advanced micro-manufacturing tools such as a micro-injection moulding tool, a femto-second laser station, a laser-direct-imaging system, several thin film deposition and patterning tools etc. A guided tour around the cleanroom is also on the agenda.
